2014 Engineer of the Year: Shelly Pederson, City of Bloomington

Shelly Pederson, city engineer with the City of Bloomington, was selected as the City Engineer of the Year for 2014. The award was presented at the CEAM 2015 Annual Conference.

Since 1999, Shelly has served as Blooomington city engineer where she manages a full service staff of 31 professionals. She also manages the Engineering CIP, which includes $26 million for 2014 and an additional $256 million is programmed for projects from 2015-2018, some of which are well underway on design and ROW acquisition.

Shelly acts as the Public Works liaison for large developments and studies being done by other city departments. She fulfills the duties of Acting Public Works Director as requested or assigned and attends all City Council meetings and Planning Commission meetings as needed. Shelly integrated the Traffic Division into the Engineering Division during department restructuring; including engineering, planning, and budget functions.

Prior to serving as Bloomington's city engineer, she served the city as a senior civil engineer. Her career has also included working with Sherburne County Highway Department; Johnson and Associates in Fargo, ND; Hansen, Thorpe, Pellinen, Olson, Inc., in Eden Prairie, MN;  Moore Engineering Inc., in West Fargo, ND; and City of Moorhead.

Shelly has a bachelor's of science degree from North Dakota State University and a master's of science degree from Minnesota State University-Mankato.

In addition to her involvement with CEAM, she has been involved in multiple public works related organizations, including the Minnesota Chapter of the American Public Works Association, Met Council, Minnesota Local Technical Assistance Program, Municipal State Aid Screening Board, Municipal State Aid Rules Committee, and MN Water Resources Conference Planning Committee.
