2015 Engineer of the Year: John Maczko, City of St Paul

John Maczko, city engineer with the City of St. Paul, was selected as the City Engineer of the Year for 2015. The award was presented at the CEAM 2016 Annual Conference.

Since 2003, John has served as the St. Paul city engineer where he serves as the top engineering professional within the city. He is responsible for oversight of all engineering divisions as well as the operations sections that report to them, including the Street Maintenance Division. John is involved in all aspects of public works operations, management and budgeting and also assists the director of public works as part of the management team to oversee operations of the department in general.

John has a rich employment history with the City of St. Paul that began in 1985 and has served in the roles of city traffic engineer, traffic operations engineer, assistant traffic engineer, traffic operations engineer, electrical operations and maintenance engineer; signal design engineer; signal timing engineer; and signal and lighting construction inspector.

John has a bachelor's of science degree in civil engineering from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus. In addition to his involvement with CEAM on our conference planning and legislative committees, John is an active member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), North Central Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (NCITE), American Public Works Association (APWA), past member of the NCITE Signal Committee, and was also the creator and first chair of the NCITE Pedestrian Committee.

In addition to serving his profession, John has served the community by being the Fire Chief of Mendota Heights since 1985 and has been a volunteer firefighter since 1978. He is also a member of the Minnesota Fire Chiefs Association, past regionaldDirector of the Minnesota State Fire Department Association, past president of the Capitol City Regional Firefighter Association, past secretary of the Dakota County Fire Chief Association, and past secretary of the Dakota County Fire Chief Association.
